Extract from British Medical Journal - June 1983. "Helen R. NEVE MD MRCGP :
Dr. Helen R. Neve, who worked with the China Inland Mission and in Edinburgh, died on 26 April at Tunbridge Wells, aged 92.
Helen Ronaldson Ley was born in Govan, and her short marriage to a naval officer ended when he was killed during the First World War. She never remarried. She trained first as a sanitary inspector, and then went on to study medicine at Edinburgh University, graduating MB ChB in 1929.
Having worked for a period in primitive conditions in Poland, she served for 11 years with the China Inland Mission. During this appointment she was subjected to three years of wartime internment under the Japanese. Surviving this ordeal, she returned to Edinburgh and started work on an MD thesis. In 1947 she was appointed by the Edinburgh Medical Missionary Society as resident doctor in the Livingstone Memorial Dispensary in the Cowgate. She proceeded MD in 1948, her thesis being on the relation of placental infarction to the toxaemias of pregnancy. In 1951 the Dispensary became part of Edinburgh University's newly established general practice teaching unit. Dr. Neve transferred to the university staff as a lecturer until her retirement from active practice in 1958. She was a foundation member of the Royal College of General Practitioners.
Dr. Neve had more than her fair share of tribulations in life: widowed early, she suffered the privations of life in internment and in later years was beset by complete deafness. She never allowed these things to embitter her. Instead she rose above them to lead a fruitful life of service to others. She was unfailingly cheerful, her attitude to life being much influenced by her strong Christian faith."
