Narrative

1 NAME Tentative theory:-
1 NAME Nicholas Maughan, Licensed Victualler lived in (or owned) Newbrough Hall. His son, Nicholas, "had his way" with a servant, Mary Hay Stephenson, daughter of a carter. He was forced to marry her, but thrown out of the Hall. He made his way to Newcastle where he made a living as a lowly workman (fruiterer/labourer). He had a son, Nicholas (just 9 months after he married!). Nicholas died when his son was just 11 years old. Mary went back to her ather-in-law and asked for help. This
was refused and she was 'encouraged' to marry Geddes, with whom she had three children: Olive, Douglas and Alex (there may have been another child). Nicholas, Mary's son, was brought up by Geddes, and was always known as 'Nicholas Geddes' or, sometimes, 'Ged'
1 NAME When Nicholas ('Ged') was old enough he went to University, paid for by his Grandfather, Nicholas Maughan, who after all recognised him as his true grandson. The other Geddes children were NOT so helped financially.
1 NAME Nicholas 'Ged' Maughan thus went to University, met Mabel Farrow and, after they graduated, they married. Nicholas then took in Alex (who had bow legs), Douglas and Olive, his half-siblings, and looked after them as he had promised his mother before she died. Marjory clearly remembers 'Uncle Douglas'.
