Newspaper obituary reads: "James P. Neve was born in England, Oct. 23rd, 1831, and came to America with his parents and eight brothers and sisters, settling at Schenactady, New York. Here he was united in marriage to Miss Anstis Kenney in 1853, moving to Ionia, Michigan in 1854 and as early pioneers came to Pierson in 1860.
In 1864 he enlisted and served his country in Co. K, 31st regiment of Michigan Veterans Volunteers to the end of the Civil war.
In 1872 death claimed his wife, mother of their seven childcren: he remained a widower until his death at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mary Carpenter, Jan 7, 1920, making his age eighty-nine years, two months and fourteen days.
He was a kind and loving father and a good friend to all.
He leaves to mourn their loss one brother, six children, twenty-two grand-children, twenty-four great-grand-children and a host of friends.
Funeral services were held last Saturday at 10 o'clock at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mary Carpenter, and interment was made in the Pierson cemetery. Rev. Chas. Ostrom officiating."
