Educated at Cheltenham. Lieut: 43rd Kent Rifle Volunteers. Commanded F Company, 2nd Vol Bn, East Kent Regiment. Lived at Hole Park, Rolvenden. Then at Pullington, Benenden, Kent. Rented East Hill House, Tenterden in 1913 for about 10 months before moving to Ashenden (1914-1935). Educated at Cheltenham College from 1873 to 1877. Was in shooting team that won the Ashburton Cup at Wimbledon in 1877. Served in 3rd R. West Kent Regiment (Militia) in Malta in Boer War. Awarded the VD. Captain 23 Feb 1898, appointed Major on retirement 21 Sept 1901. Ashenden was built in the 18th century by Mr William Children and at one time was owned by a Mr Robert Curteis. Was the Mayor of Tenterden in 1921 and 1922 (at least 2 terms). Marriage notice in the Times No 36538 (Aug 1901) reads 'On the 17th August, at St Barnabas Kensington, by the Revd. W H F Edge, Vicar of Tilfors, Surrey, Herbert, Captain 2 RWK of Pullington Benenden Kent and eldest surviving son of Richard Neve of Ash Lawn Benenden to Lilian, eldest daughter of the late Anthony Goldschmidt of Kimberley. He was a Kent County Councillor from 1892 for the Cranbrook Division. He left an estate valued at £6,726.
